"It's the people we love,
the people we live with,
that elude us the most."
-A River Runs Through It

Please don't strip my mind ...leave something behind
Matthew an American student in Paris, meets Theo & Isabelle, they bond over their shared love for cinema. Somewhere down the line, things get out hand.

The very first thing I noticed about The Dreamers is Bertolucci's explicit use of the colour red-it's almost in every other frame. Very Sam Mendesque in American Beauty with the roses. I had hoped that in the commentary Bertolucci would answer some of the questions I had concerning the art direction, but he never did. Which left the movie open to interpretation.

The movie is an adaptation of a book (The Holy Innocent by Gilbert Adair) I tried to get a copy when I heard that the book explores the Matthew/Theo relationship more...vividly. But the book is now out of print for some odd reason.

The vid
The Dreamers and the classics are separate. At some point, the distinction between the two is blurred.

Lyrics Strip Mind by Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Arthur Jaded indicated
The boulevard would never be
So full of love and life again
(oh sing it)

Hot as Hades* early eighties
Sing another song make me
Feel like I'm in love again
(got to loose the wig)
oh yeah oh yeah
Please don't strip my mind
Leave something behind
Please don't strip my mind
oh yeah oh oh.

Please don't strip my mind
Leave something behind
Please don't strip my mind

El dorado won the lotto
All that cash and not a clue
But now you know what I've been through
Please don't strip my mind
Leave something behind
Please don't strip my mind
Please don't strip my mind
Leave something behind

ETA: Correction for lyrics
*The Greek and Roman god of the underworld and the ruler of the dead. Also called Dis. The underworld itself was also known to the Greeks as Hades. 1 ‡ The Greek and Roman underworld later became associated with the hell of Christianity, as in the expression “hot as Hades.” (The New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy > 2. This was absolutely gorgeous! I only saw the movie once on big screen and you've made me want to watch it again. Now. Which is what a vid should get you to do. Also, lovely song choice, I've never really listened to the lyrics before, they're a lot more depressing than I expected (although that's often the case with lyrics).

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I watched the vid anyway because who doesn't love Michael Pitt? I just loved the mood of it, the pace and cutting. It's really wonderful.

Thank you for the lovely feedback! :)

A few years ago while watching late night tv I saw the trailer for "The Dreamers". And I was sold. It's a really good movie (if you are willing to overlook a few cringe inducing moments).

The relaxed and laid back intro is nice in constrast with the beginning of the voice. Also, I'm so in love with your use of the light beams, stock footage, parallels, and movement.

Lovely video.
If you are really interested in getting a copy of the book, there are some used ones available through Barnes & Noble's online store.
I recently bought a copy, though I have to warn you, the cheapest are $100.00, though it's worth it. The Matthew/Theo relationship is very well detailed, and the ending is shocking compared to the movie's.

Sorry for the seemingly random comment. I'm catching up on my giant list of must-be-feedbacked vids. I wanted to let you know that Brad and I were really impressed with this when you entered it at the FNVA's. We both ranked it among the top three vids for the round and found it incredibly gratifying to see how you had been steadily improving with each vid you submit. Being able to grant some recognition to that sort of improvement is what makes running an award site worth it.

Overall your cutting and pacing is just superb. I don't know the source in the slightest but I was hypnotized nonetheless. It's simultaneously dreamy and tragic. I love the intro with all the on-beat fades, as it does a fantastic job of setting the mood.

Some other favorite parts:

0:16 - Oh man that cross-dissolve is GORGEOUS. I love how you returned to that image.
0:18 - And all of a sudden things turn violent and chaotic. Great use of the music.
0:37 - Love the jump cuts
0:44 - Fantastic parallel with the papers falling
0:56 - Love the intercutting between the movie and 'real' life
1:04 - Nice clip connection with the window
1:07 - Great use of the shaky cam on the guitars
1:32 - Wonderful attention to character positioning in the quick intercutting
1:37 - LOL @ the banana. My mind instantly went to a very naughty place. ;) Especially since he's splitting it apart. I mean, ouch.
2:10 - Now things start to get heatbreaking. You did a fantastic job of building it up in a kind of gradual deterioration.
2:26 - Love the circular narrative as we go back to the beginning.
2:30 - Beautiful cross-dissolve/overlay. One of my favorite parts of the vid.
2:42 - Hee, is that's gorgeous image again.

And the ending image is just so haunting. It's a perfect way to cap off the vid. Like I said, I was really impressed with this. Great job and I can't wait to see more of your work! If I have time tonight I'll feedback some more. :)

Thank you for the the feedback, DC (feedback however random is always welcomed)!!! :) The Dreamers is in my top ten favourite movies and I loved making this vid. I've been soooo busy this year with RL related matters, I'm really *sorry* for the late reply.

Thank you again. :)
